Death toll in Nigeria terror attack rises to 40

The death toll from a terrorist attack on Binnari village in Nigeria’s Taraba State has risen to 40, according to Amnesty International Nigeria.

Axar.az reports, citing Premium Times, that the attack took place on October 23 in Karim Lamido Local Government Area. Police had initially confirmed 10 deaths, while Amnesty International reported that 40 people had been killed and that additional bodies were still being discovered.

Residents said armed men had set fire to houses, shops, food supplies and motorcycles. Some bodies were burned beyond recognition, while many people remained missing.

Amnesty International condemned the attack and called for an impartial investigation, justice for the victims and compensation for survivors.

The organisation also criticised Nigerian authorities for failing to adequately protect rural communities from repeated attacks and said the failure to prosecute suspected perpetrators was encouraging further violence.
