US, Israel may resume major strikes on Iran if talks fail

The United States and Israel could resume a large-scale bombing campaign against Iran shortly after the US midterm elections if diplomatic efforts fail to produce a deal.

Axar.az reports, citing Axios, that regional mediators led by Qatar are trying to revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran to prevent a renewed war. US and Israeli officials expect a potential operation to involve a week of intensive strikes targeting Iran’s leadership, energy facilities, nuclear sites and infrastructure.

President Trump told Axios in a brief interview Wednesday that negotiations with Iran are taking place through mediators but stressed that he doesn't know whether they'll bear fruit.

"We need to finish the job — either through a deal or another way — we will find out if negotiations can succeed," he said.

According to the report, mediators are pressing Iran to accept proposals that could include allowing UN inspectors to visit nuclear facilities damaged in previous strikes in exchange for limited sanctions relief. The diplomatic efforts are intended to avert another military escalation after the midterms.
