US President Donald Trump has criticized Brazil’s election, calling it an embarrassment and a “disgraceful situation” for the country.

Axar.az reports, citing US media, that Trump made the remarks to reporters at Joint Base Andrews while departing for a campaign rally in South Carolina, when asked who he considered the legitimate winner.

“I don't want to comment on it right now, but I thought the election was a very great embarrassment to the people of Brazil. I watched the election. I didn't take sides,” Trump said.

He added that he had been asked by Brazil’s then-current president not to take sides. Trump also pointed to the Brazilian stock market’s decline following Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory.

It should be noted that left-wing Workers’ Party leader Lula da Silva won the second round of Brazil’s presidential election. His rival, right-wing opposition candidate and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, received 48.26% of the vote. Flávio Bolsonaro later travelled to the United States despite a court-imposed ban on leaving Brazil.
