Gen Z protests in Germany turn violent, dozens arrested

Violent clashes, looting and vandalism broke out in several German cities following nationwide Gen Z protests, with Frankfurt and Cologne among the worst affected.

Axar.az reports, citing Die Zeit, that 54 people were arrested in Frankfurt, where shops were looted and Molotov cocktails were thrown at officers. More than 100 police officers were injured, including one who suffered serious injuries.

In Hamburg and Cologne, police deployed water cannons after demonstrators threw fireworks and other objects at officers. In Berlin, 56 people were arrested and 27 police officers sustained minor injuries.

The protests, organized by the Gen Z regelt initiative, initially focused on demands for increased funding for schools, social justice and climate protection, as well as opposition to compulsory military service.

Most demonstrations were peaceful during the day, but violence erupted in several cities after nightfall.
