US President Donald Trump has said that American financial and military assistance to Israel will be cut off at the end of 2026, adding that the country can continue purchasing US weapons.
Axar.az reports, citing Fox News, that Trump said the decision had been discussed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for several years and that the Israeli leader had proposed ending the assistance.
“We were giving them $4 billion – we are – but it gets cut off at the end of the year,” Trump said.
“I was approached by Bibi Netanyahu, and we’ve been talking about it for a couple of years because it’s a lot of money. He brought it up. He said, ‘I think it would be appropriate if we do not receive aid.’”
Trump argued that Israel no longer needed the assistance, describing it as a prosperous country.
“They don’t need it. Israel's our number one. We give them more than anybody else, and they no longer need it,” he said.
Trump said the support included both money and military equipment, and could be considered military aid, cash or barter.
“I’m going to put it in any way you want to define it. You can consider it barter. You can consider military aid or cash. It’s what we give them — $4 billion of things and money, and they don’t need it,” he said.
The US president also stressed that the change would not prevent Israel from buying American weapons.
The current US-Israel security assistance agreement provides approximately $3.8 billion annually through 2028. However, Trump did not provide details on how the proposed cutoff would affect the existing agreement.
