Soldier martyred in PKK attack in southeast Turkey

A soldier was martyred in an attack by PKK terrorists on a military outpost on the Iraqi border, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement Thursday.

Four soldiers were wounded in the previous night’s incident in Cukurca district, Hakkari province, but are not in a critical condition, the statement added.

The attack happened when a group of terrorists targeted the Geriktepe base at around 9.15 p.m. local time (1815GMT).

A security official speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media said a group of PKK terrorists crossed the Iraq border to attack the base and opened fire after being detected.

The level of PKK casualties was unknown.

More than 1,200 victims, including security force personnel and civilians, have lost their lives since the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July 2015.
