Ten police officers were killed late Sunday in an attack by Taliban fighters in western Herat province, an Afghan official told.

Another officer was injured in the attack that targeted the Salma Dam in the Chisti Sharif district, according to Herat governorate spokesman Farhad Jailani who said four fighters were also killed.

The Salma Dam was built with the help of India and inaugurated last year.

The attack occurred just prior to President Ashraf Ghani’s Eid al-Fitr address in which he urged the Taliban to return to peace talks.

The Taliban is yet to comment on the attack.
