EU neglecting needs of refugee children

Last year alone 30,000 refugee children entered the EU via Greece and Italy. Incredibly, almost half were unaccompanied.

Axar.az reports citing Press Tv.

According to a statement just released by UNHCR, UNICEF and IOM, three UN agencies, EU nations are not providing enough school spaces for refugee children, teachers are not adequately trained and there are language barriers.

In addition, there is limited access to psychological support. We raised these concerns with the bloc's executive arm. According to experts, early integration is important but things shouldn't be rushed either.

The UN says 929 refugees have died in the Mediterranean so far this year as they attempted to reach the EU.

Rights groups and lawmakers say it is immoral that the EU is not providing safe routes for asylum seekers and instead is giving billions of euro to Turkey and Libya to prevent refugees from travelling here.

We have been speaking to a number of EU legislators who are calling on the bloc's member states to stop prioritizing border controls, detention and deportation.

Instead, they say, the focus should be on living up to their obligations under international law to protect refugee children.
