Uzbek gov’t says President Karimov has died

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov has died at the age of 78, Interfax cited the Uzbek government as saying in an official statement on Friday.

Earlier, Reuters had reported Karimov’s death, citing three diplomatic sources.


On Aug.28, fergana.ru said the president was hospitalized and a day later the same website reported his death. However, the news was not confirmed by the government.


Islam Karimov was born in Samarkand in 1938 and ruled Uzbekistan since 1989.
