Georgian Ambassador to the Netherlands resigns

Georgian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Netherlands David Solomonia has resigned has resigned in protest against the ruling Georgian Dream Party's decision to postpone EU membership talks until 2028.

Axar.az reports that the diplomat issued a statement:

“The majority of my three decades in the Georgian diplomatic service have been dedicated to working on the issue of European integration.

It is a great happiness when your professional obligations coincide with your life choices.

I faithfully performed my official duties until I believed that I could at least have an impact on the processes. Today, this hope has ended.

I condemn any violence and am leaving the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.”

Note that earlier, Georgia's ambassador to Bulgaria also resigned in protest against the ruling party's decision to suspend EU membership talks.

On November 28, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the suspension of EU membership talks until 2028 and a rejection of grants. This decision sparked mass protests by the opposition, which have been supported by President Zurabishvili.
