Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed their close ties in a phone call shortly after Donald Trump's inauguration as the 47th U.S. president.

Putin highlighted the enduring partnership between Russia and China, built on shared interests and independent of changing political circumstances. Xi praised their cooperation, citing its role in reforming and developing the global system.
The call, which followed Xi’s earlier conversation with Trump, signaled coordinated efforts by Moscow and Beijing in light of the new U.S. administration.
Putin also expressed openness to dialogue with Trump, welcoming the U.S. president's desire to restore direct communication and prevent World War III. He emphasized the importance of addressing global issues like stability and the conflict in Ukraine on an equal basis with mutual respect. Putin reiterated that a long-term peace in Ukraine must respect all nations involved and address the root causes of the crisis.
Trump, meanwhile, hinted at potential cooperation with China on issues like regional conflicts and curbing fentanyl production, while signaling hope for peace talks involving Ukraine and Russia.
