Polls open in Belarus presidential election

Voting has started in the presidential elections in Belarus.

Axar.az reports that voting started at 8:00 AM local time (9:00 AM Baku time) and will end at 8:00 PM.

There are 5 candidates running for president in the elections: the current President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, independent Anna Kanopatskaya, Oleg Gaydukevich from the Liberal Democratic Party, Sergey Sirankov from the Belarusian Communist Party, and Alexander Khizhnyak from the Republic Labor and Justice Party.

The Chairman of the Belarusian Central Election Commission (CEC), Igor Karpenko, stated that 486 international observers have been accredited for the presidential elections. The final results of the voting will be announced by the Central Election Commission no later than February 5.

Members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan and representatives of the Central Election Commission are also observing the elections.
