A loud explosion was heard at the Shahid Rajaee port in Iran’s southern city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday.

Axar.az reports local media quoted the residents as saying the blast shook the ground and was heard in nearby towns.

"A strong explosion occurred at Shahid Rajaee port a few minutes ago, but the cause is not yet known," Hormozgan province’s crisis management chief said.

According to Tasnim news agency, the explosion occurred at an administrative building inside the port.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but Tasnim said the blast caused extensive damage.

According to local media, Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, Hormozgan’s crisis management chief, said the explosion was triggered by "the detonation of several stored containers in the port yard."

At least 80 people have been injured in the explosion at Iran’s Shahid Rajaee port and forty of the injured have been transferred to Shahid Mohammadi Hospital.

According to Tasnim news agency, all emergency and rapid response teams are currently on site, assisting with the evacuation of the wounded.

Mehrdad Hassanzadeh said investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing and results would be announced to the public as soon as possible.
