To weaken Hamas financially, Israeli expert Eyal Ofer suggests canceling a specific series of 200 shekel banknotes known to have been transferred into Gaza.
Axar.az, citing JP, reports that since Gaza operates largely as a cash-based economy, Hamas has accumulated wealth, estimated at 4–5 billion shekels, by controlling the cash market, aid supplies, and fuel distribution.
Most of this wealth is held in large-denomination notes. The proposed strategy involves the Bank of Israel invalidating only the serial-numbered bills sent to Gaza, minimizing harm to others.
This could disrupt Hamas’s financial power, create psychological pressure, and potentially be leveraged for hostage negotiations.
