Puntland regional state security forces have seized control of Togga Miraale, the largest and most strategic ISIS base in northeastern Somalia, in a coordinated military operation early Saturday morning.
Axar.az informs according to foreign media, according to security officials, the operation was launched at dawn with airstrike support from international partners, paving the way for ground forces to move into the area. Togga Miraale, long considered the main base of ISIS in Somalia, had served as a hub for militants for nearly a decade, complete with water wells, cultivated land, and fortified positions.
Prior to the operation, ISIS militants launched artillery attacks on Puntland military facilities in an apparent attempt to preempt the offensive.
Following the assault, the ISIS fighters reportedly fled to Sadow, an area in Togga Balade near Bosaso city, where other ISIS units are believed to be based.
Officials have not yet confirmed any casualties among the militants, but Puntland forces are conducting a thorough assessment of the area, including a sweep for landmines possibly planted by retreating ISIS fighters.
The recapture of Togga Miraale marks a significant milestone in Puntland's counter-terrorism efforts, especially after recent tactical retreats by Puntland troops from certain parts of the Miraale River due to logistical vulnerabilities and reinforcement challenges.
