Number of Iranian athletes detained in South Korea rises

Out of the 19 members of Iran’s national athletics team sent to the Asian Championship in South Korea, only 14 have returned home.

Axar.az reports that four athletes and a coach were detained in South Korea.

The IRNA news agency initially stated that the athletes were unable to return due to “some legal issues,” but the reports was soon deleted.

Other sources claim the Iranian athletes were arrested on charges of sexual assault and phone theft.

Earlier, South Korean media reported that two Iranian athletes and a coach were arrested over allegations of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old South Korean woman.
