Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called an agreement between Washington and Moscow allowing Russian diesel exports unfair, saying it was reached while Ukrainian and US delegations were holding talks in Florida.
Axar.az reports, citing Ukrainian media, that Zelensky made the remarks to journalists while commenting on a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 9.
The Ukrainian president said one of the first steps toward resolving the conflict could be an energy truce, which he described as particularly important for Ukrainian families.
“Just as our team is holding talks with the American team in Florida, the US president is speaking with the Kremlin leader, the leader of this war, the leader of this aggression. And he reaches an agreement under which America gives Russia the opportunity to export diesel fuel,” Zelensky said.
In his view, implementing the agreement could generate millions or even billions of dollars in revenue for Moscow, which would be used to continue military operations.
“This is additional money for this war. This is additional money for the suffering inflicted on us. Of course, it only fuels Putin and gives him the opportunity to wage even more war,” the president stressed.
Zelensky also said that decisions of this kind, made amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, undermine trust between partners.
“I believe our team is simply being used as a smokescreen. And that is certainly unfair; it is certainly not how partners should treat each other. In my view, this is a weak decision. Unfortunately, a weak decision by strong partners,” he said.
It should be noted that Trump held talks with Putin yesterday. Following the talks, the US lifted sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7, 2027.
