“Ali and Nino” or how Azerbaijan became free

Long awaited movie “Ali and Nino” based worldwide bestseller novel of Kurban Said is presented on 6th of October.

Actors, crew of the movie and some officials attended to the presentation of the movie. Director of the movie is BAFTA award laureate Asif Kapadia, producer is Kris Thykier, executive producer is vice president of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva and the writer of the movie is Christopher Hamton. Kurban Said’s worldwide bestseller novel describes Azerbaijan of XX century which has been translated into 33 languages.

Main topic of the movie was love of two young people - Alikhan Shirvanshir who is son of the aristocratic family of Azerbaijan and daughter of the Georgian businessman, Nino Kipiani. Situations cover 1910s, which was chaos period in Azerbaijan because of dawn of the Russian czar and freedom fight of the Azerbaijan.

Besides Ali and Nino’s love, movie showed the world Azerbaijan’s struggles during and after Czar’s regime and how Azerbaijan became the first Democratic Muslim country in the East.

104 minutes long movie did not cover whole book, yet it could cover main faces, events and idea of the book. At the beginning of the book Alikhan’s uncle and his family comes from Iran and discusses current situation in Iran and Azerbaijan with his father. After that book describes relation history of the Ali and Nino, their meetings and etc.. Events continue in Shusha, Azerbaijani city which is under invasion of Armenia right now.

When Alikhan’s father sends telegram to him and informs about upcoming war, Alikhan and Armenian Melik had conversation about war on Ali’s way back from Shusha to Baku.

One of the points which has drawn attention of critics and audience was absence of the famous Azerbaijani actor during movie. According to the cast and crew information which was presented to the world media, Fakhraddin Manafov, famous Azerbaijani actor was in the cast as a famous Azerbaijani billionaire and oil magnate Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, yet we couldn’t see Haji Zeynalabdin in the movie. The question “why?” still remains unanswered. Critics and news agencies are trying to get answers from movie officials.

Although there were removed scenes, skipped book parts, movie covered events and main idea of the book and could draw attention of the local and foreign media and audience.
