The European Parliament’s resolution can be described as a diplomatic disgrace and diplomatic failure.
Axar.az reports that assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev made the statement to journalists.
“First of all, it should be noted that the decisions adopted by the European Parliament hold no significance for the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Republic of Azerbaijan has no obligations before this institution. Secondly, the European Parliament, as an institution, is not a body with a specific mandate to express positions on such matters. Who or which states have given such a mandate to the parliamentary institution of the European Union to make such statements about regions and countries located outside the Union’s borders?
In this regard, those decisions have no significance for us at all. However, this process is an indicator of certain trends. The Republic of Azerbaijan is taking serious steps to ensure lasting peace and security in the region. As can be seen, within the Armenia–Azerbaijan normalization process, Azerbaijan is taking serious steps toward shaping the economic benefits of peace, including contributing to Armenia’s energy security.
In such circumstances, just one day after the visit of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Armenia, a diplomatically disgraceful resolution is adopted by the European Parliament. These individuals in the European Parliament must understand that they are directly hindering the peace process. We assess this as disruptive and provocative actions,” Hajiyev noted.
