Azerbaijan approves opening embassy in Portugal

The Milli Majlis (Parliament) has approved the establishment of an Azerbaijani embassy in Portugal.

Axar.az reports that the issue was discussed during today’s extraordinary parliamentary session.

Under the approved document, the embassy will be located in Lisbon.

MP Samir Valiyev said relations between Azerbaijan and Portugal are based on friendly ties and noted that opening an embassy in Lisbon would make a significant contribution to bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation.

Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Interparliamentary Relations of the Parliament Samad Seyidov also described relations between the two countries as positive, adding that Portugal is expected to open its embassy in Azerbaijan in the near future.

The bill was adopted in a single reading following discussions.

It should be noted that Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa previously stated in a congratulatory message to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that the opening of embassies in Baku and Lisbon would contribute to the development of bilateral relations.
