Ed Sheeran has revealed the reasons behind why he wears an engagement ring – after pundits wondered whether the singer was already married after he started sporting the band.

Speaking on Australian radio show Kylie and Jackie O, though, the singer was asked about the ring and whether he’d secretly married his fiance Cherry Seaborn – and he was keen to set the record straight as to the meaning of this whimsical piece of platinum. He’d recently revealed to Lorraine he wore one because he could never understand why men didn’t wear them, too, but he also told the Aussie radio hosts: ‘It also means that nobody will know when we have got married.’

Ah, we see what you’ve done there, Sheeran, you diabolical. Kylie replied: ‘Ahh, I see what you’re trying to do! Throw everyone off the scent! I get it!’ To which Ed simply replied: ‘Yeah.’ He’s not giving much away, this one.

Last week Ed spoke to ITV’s Lorraine, where he explained the meaning behind the band that had the masses chanting secret wedding. ‘I never saw why men didn’t wear engagement rings,’ he explained. ‘It’s the same commitment either way. Cherry made it for me herself out of silver clay. I really like it.’ Speaking at the Brit awards, he added: ‘I’m not married. I’m wearing an engagement ring as well. I feel like, you know, you both should.’ The wedding is shrouded in secrecy, as you’d probably expect from a private star like Ed, but Kyle and Jackie O did ask whether he would perform any of his own tunes during his reception – tunes that are often played by other newlyweds that aren’t Ed Sheeran.

So it’s likely of no great shock he said: ‘It would be a little bit weird.’ Fair shout, Ed – can’t really see you taking your mate Cherry for a spin around the DF to Thinking Out Loud. Ed popped the question to Cherry over New Years and shared the happy news with his Instagram followers – a moment of non-privacy, we guess. He wrote on Instagram: ‘Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well.’

Meanwhile it’s been reported the star is building a chapel on his property, hinting he’ll get hitched at home. We love his view for convenience and, frankly, if we could build a church (and a bar) at our house we’d do the same.
