The president and first lady of the USA don’t exactly look cosy in public – an indicator of their separate lives, according to sources. An eye-opening profile of Melania Trump in the Washington Post documents her growing influence as first lady and her relationship with her husband.

She and Donald Trump reportedly have their own bedrooms within the White House, and have very different daily routines. A longtime friend of the president said: ‘They spend very little to no time together.’ While the president wakes at 5.30am, switches on the TV and fires off tweets, Melania’s morning routine is focused on getting the couple’s son Barron ready for school.

They are equally distant in their free time, according to sources. While Trump spends time playing golf and dining with politicians and executives at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Melania is rarely seen there.

It has been suggested that they do not even eat together at the White House, though this was strongly denied by Melania’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham. And allegations about Trump’s private life – he is accused of having affairs with porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal – have not helped their relationship, according to friends of the couple. It is said the space between the couple has widened further since the allegations came to light.

Ever since their relationship was cast into the limelight during Trump’s successful run for office, the couple have appeared awkward and unaffectionate in public. Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, an old friend of Melania’s, said: ‘She is a dignified, private person, and she’ll deal with her personal life in private and it’s no one’s business.

‘They are not that couple that holds hands just because; she is old-world European and it’s not who she is.’ The couple has even been subject to rumous claiming Melania does not even live in the White House – which were laughed off by Ms Grisham.
