Conchita Wurst rose, like a phoenix, to global fame in 2014 when she won the Eurovision Song Contest.
But those of you who associate Conchita with flowing locks, a beard and a pageant gown will be rather surprised by her latest video.
The 30-year-old looks literally unrecognisable in the video for her new single Hit Me, which sees the singer entirely ditch the image we’re used to.
In the industrial video for the track, Conchita – real name Tom Neuwirth – sports a short white ‘do and facial hair.
It seems Tom is taking control of this electronic banger, although it was uploaded to YouTube under Conchita’s name.
Fans were impressed with the androynous look worn by Conchita/Tom in the video, as well as the song.
One person commented: ‘Wow, Conchita, you look stunning. You’re like a beautiful sexy fallen evil alien angel or something like that’, while another viewer said: ‘I love that Conchita can be feminine and masculine at the same time!’ And a comment on YouTube read: ‘It took a minute to even recognise you. Amazing!’
Conchita became a global LGBTQ icon after her momentous win in Copenhagen, when her song Rise Like A Phoenix won with 290 points, marking Austria’s first Eurovision win since 1966.
The Austrian singer performed in full drag at the event, and upon winning, she proclaimed: ‘We are unity, and we are unstoppable.’
Fans wore her trademark beard to cheer her on – but in 2017, Tom admitted he was ready to ditch Conchita.
Speaking to Germany’s Die Welt, he said: ‘I feel like I want to create a new persona… with the bearded lady, I have achieved everything I wanted since the Song Contest victory.
‘I question myself more than ever these days, looking for what I can do well. I am looking for myself, and Tom rebels.
‘I don’t need her anymore… I have to kill her.’
Tom has, on numerous occasions, explained that Conchita is not a trans woman, and that while in drag, he feels entirely asexual. He uses male pronouns while out of drag, and female pronouns while performing as Conchita.
The singer last year revealed his HIV positive status after a former partner threatened to go public. Conchita/Tom wrote on Instagram: ‘I have been hiv-positive for many years. this is actually irrelevant to the public, but an ex-boyfriend is threatening to go public with this private information, and I will not give anyone the right to frighten me or affect my life.’
