A 26-year-old Afghan man was sentenced to life in prison by a German court on Tuesday for a knife attack that killed a police officer and injured five others at an anti-Islam rally last year.

Axar.az informs, citing DW, Sulaiman A., whose last name is withheld in Germany for privacy reasons, was filmed attacking officers and members of the anti-Islam group PAX Europa in the western city of Mannheim.

The defendant was shot by police and brought to a local hospital.

The attack was met with dismay across Germany and reignited debate about asylum and deportations to Afghanistan.
