Georgian President Salome Zurabashvili refused to sign the law cancelling quotas for women in the parliamentary elections.
Axar.az reports that Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said this.
"We received a veto regarding changes to the electoral code related to the gender quota. We will give it to the Committee on Legal Issues, the institution will consider this issue, and only after that we will bring it to the plenary session," Papuashvili said.
If parliament overrides the president's veto, the law will be sent back to the president for signature. If Zurabishvili refuses to sign the law a second time, then the speaker of the parliament will sign it and then the law will enter into force.
It should be noted that on April 4, the Georgian parliament approved the law cancelling quotas for women. According to the current article of the Election Code of Georgia, at least one out of every four candidates for deputy in the lists of political forces participating in the parliamentary elections must be women. According to the initiators of the bill, the presence of a quota in the legislation shows that women are oppressed in the country.
