A militant attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir killed 26 people, including one Nepalese national, and injured 17, making it the deadliest assault on civilians since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Axar.az, citing Times, reports that the shooting occurred in Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot, amid a resurgence in tourism as violence in the region had previously declined.
A group called “Kashmir Resistance” claimed responsibility, citing opposition to the settlement of over 85,000 non-locals, which they say is changing the region’s demographics. In response, local organizations called for a shutdown, schools suspended classes, and airlines added flights as tourists fled.
Prime Minister Modi and other top officials cut international trips short. The attack underscores the ongoing conflict in the region, which has seen decades of insurgency and tensions following India’s 2019 revocation of Kashmir’s special status.
