Russian and US leaders Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have discussed a direct contact between Putin and Vladimir Zelensky among other topics.

Axar.az reports, citing TASS, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated this.

"Certainly, the parties touched upon the issue of direct contact and the topic of continuing consultations between Russia and Ukraine," he said when asked whether the leaders discussed any potential high-level talks.

Peskov noted that communication between Moscow and Kiev has been reestablished and is currently ongoing. "Russians and Ukrainians are now engaged in dialogue," he said. "These contacts have been revived, which is quite important at this stage."

Regarding US involvement, he confirmed that Washington is maintaining its mediating role. "No, the US is not withdrawing from the mediation," he said, describing it as "highly efficient." According to Peskov, "contacts between the two countries have been set, and direct dialogue is taking place."

He also addressed the Vatican's initiative to host negotiations, saying the Kremlin is aware of the offer, though no final decision has been made. "Everyone knows about the Pope’s initiative. The Vatican issued a corresponding statement. Of course, the Russian side appreciates any effort to contribute. However, no specific arrangements have been confirmed regarding the venue for future discussions," he added.

Commenting on the overall prospects for a resolution, Peskov noted that "the US wants results as soon as possible." "Trump has spoken about this, and Putin agrees. There is shared interest in a swift settlement. Our priority is to resolve the conflict by addressing its root causes," the Kremlin spokesman concluded.
