American scientists have discovered a new coronavirus, HKU5-CoV-2.

Axar.az reports that the journal "Nature Communications" published information about this.

According to the information, it belongs to the same family as the deadly MERS-CoV virus:

"It is a zoonotic pathogen transmitted from two-humped camels to humans and causes severe respiratory illness that kills a third of those infected. The HKU5-CoV-2 virus was discovered at the end of February 2025. Scientists immediately declared it potentially dangerous for humans. However, the effectiveness of the new virus is much lower than COVID-19."
