Armenia-Azerbaijan talks focus on principles, not peace

Amid the ongoing negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, what is being discussed at the table is not a peace agreement but a principles agreement. This means that the principles and theses related to a future peace agreement are reflected there, and the parties have no obligations in this agreement. Based on these principles, future negotiations will be established. This document serves as the foundation for the processes that will occur later.

Axar.az reports that Tofiq Zulfugarov, former foreign minister and political analyst, made these comments while discussing Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's statement about his readiness to sign the agreed-upon items of the peace agreement.

“If the main issues are not reflected in that foundation, if Armenia does not accept the points we see as priorities, then the future peace process will be distorted. This means that future negotiations will not proceed in the necessary direction. The essence of the dispute is that Armenia raises territorial claims against us and Turkiye and does not want to abandon these claims. Pashinyan wants to sign some light, meaningless document. Naturally, Azerbaijan does not agree to this. It is clear to everyone that Armenia does not want to accept any provisions related to Karabakh. On the other hand, Armenia does not want to amend its legislation to remove territorial claims. Their actions are illogical and reveal Armenia's true intentions. If this is the case, then negotiations regarding the future peace process also lose their meaning.”
