Dr. Benny Sabti, a senior Iran researcher at Israel's Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), has warned that US President Donald Trump’s optimistic approach to direct talks with Iran over its nuclear program could backfire, potentially strengthening the Iranian regime.
Axar.az, citing JP, reports that in an interview with Maariv, Sabti criticized Trump’s public declarations that the talks were going well, arguing they project weakness and could embolden Tehran.
Sabti explained that although Iran seeks relief from sanctions, no such measures are currently on the table — in fact, the U.S. has been tightening sanctions, leading to increased Iranian mistrust. If sanctions are lifted or even eased, Sabti cautioned, it could lead to a major economic turnaround for Iran, bolstering the regime’s grip on power.
