Donations for Hong Kong fire victims reach $115 million

Donations for victims of Hong Kong’s devastating apartment complex fire have reached HK$900 million (US$115 million), alongside HK$300 million in government aid, as authorities continue recovery efforts.

Axar.az, citing AP, reports that the blaze at the Wang Fuk Court estate killed at least 146 people, with around 100 still missing.

Thousands have been displaced, many now relocated to hotels or transitional housing.

Investigations focus on possible fire code violations linked to renovation scaffolding and safety netting, which residents had complained about for nearly a year.

While public anger grows over potential government responsibility, Hong Kong authorities have tightened actions against dissent, arresting several people over calls for accountability and warning against “ulterior motives” in criticizing the government.
