Hakan Fidan warns of threats to global food security

International mechanisms are struggling to maintain peace. Developments in the Black Sea and Gulf regions clearly demonstrate the current situation. Attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea not only affect regional stability but also pose a serious threat to global food security.

Axar.az reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made these remarks while speaking at the session titled "The New Geopolitics of Connectivity: Sea Routes, Strategic Chokepoints and Corridors" held as part of the TRT World Forum 2026.

"These obstacles are, in fact, part of broader regional dynamics. Israel is expanding its policies and continuing its attacks on both Palestine and neighbouring countries. Therefore, ensuring stability in the region and preventing further escalation are extremely important. Ensuring the security of this region, on which the global economy depends, is of vital importance," the foreign minister said.

During his speech, Fidan also highlighted another important aspect concerning the Black Sea:

"As we have witnessed in the Black Sea, a maritime corridor can turn into a battlefield, while a pipeline can become a tool of pressure. And all of this can happen because of a single narrow chokepoint. Any disruption at such points can affect economies thousands of kilometres away.

In such scenarios, connectivity itself can become a source of strategic concern. Naturally, countries seek to ensure the security of their goods. When this access is threatened, an atmosphere of insecurity emerges and competition intensifies further. We must not allow this to happen."
