Maldives president stresses urgency of climate action

Investing more in renewable energy is the way forward.

Axar.az reports that this was stated by the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, during his speech at the Summit of Developing Small Island Developing States (SIDS) held on November 13 in Baku as part of COP29.

According to him, the development of island states, cities, and villages is related to this issue:

"We are losing part of our territories, and we must approach this matter comprehensively. Together, we must build resilience against climate change. We see investing more in renewable energy as a solution. We can achieve keeping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius across the planet. We must combine our efforts and take action."

The President of the Maldives also stated that COP29 must result in two key outcomes:

"Primarily, we must gather quantitative data and define new operational rules. A specific clause on this has been included in the Paris Agreement. There must be cooperation among governments. Governments can contribute to development plans. We must take action now to save our world."
