The Biden administration has informed Congress of its plan to cancel $4.65 billion in debt owed by Ukraine.

Axar.az reports that according to a letter obtained by Bloomberg News. This move is the latest in a series of actions aimed at strengthening support for Kyiv ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

The White House will forgive half of a $9 billion loan that was part of a $60 billion supplemental package approved in April.

The State Department stated in a letter to Congress dated November 18 that canceling the debt, "thereby helping Ukraine prevail, is in the national interest of the United States and its EU, G7+, and NATO partners."

This action is part of a broader initiative by President Joe Biden to expedite additional support for Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Trump has expressed that his priority will be pushing Russia and Ukraine toward peace negotiations, and Kyiv's supporters are concerned that he may reduce or cut off aid as part of this effort.
