Liberal Party debates Trudeau's future as leader

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party will be discussed.

Axar.az reports that states that the heads of the party's regional branches will exchange views on this matter.

It has been noted that the issue will be discussed today in a virtual meeting. Based on the outcomes, a party-wide convention might be called.

During the Christmas holidays, representatives of at least five regional party organizations called on the Prime Minister to step down as leader, allowing the Liberals to field a different candidate in the parliamentary elections scheduled for October.

Notably, on December 16, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced her resignation, citing Trudeau's decision to assign her to another role. On the same day, Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Minister Sean Fraser also resigned from the government.

These events sparked criticism from the opposition and several public figures, who accused the Prime Minister of losing control over his cabinet and demanded his immediate resignation. Furthermore, a few Liberal MPs voiced support for Trudeau stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

At the end of December, Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada and a former Trudeau ally, pledged that his party would vote for the government’s resignation in 2025.
