Tariff threats lead Colombia to accept U.S. migrants

The United States and Colombia reached an agreement regarding the deportation of Colombian migrants after a period of diplomatic tension.

Axar.az, citing Fox News, reports that U.S. President Donald Trump imposed pressure on Colombian President Gustavo Petro through the threat of tariffs, visa restrictions, and enhanced inspections, urging Colombia to accept repatriation flights.

Initially, Petro rejected the flights, emphasizing the need for a protocol to ensure the dignified treatment of migrants. However, after the U.S. threatened a 25% tariff on Colombian imports, with a possible increase to 50%, Petro agreed to facilitate the returns, offering his presidential plane for the effort.

Both governments issued reciprocal tariff threats during the exchange, but the agreement now centers on ensuring the deportations proceed as planned, with U.S. officials and Congress maintaining a stance for further measures if obligations are not met.
