Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has appointed Sheikh Osama al-Rifai as the country's new Grand Mufti for the transitional period.

Axar.az reports that this decision was made after a meeting with scholars as part of a conference of Muslim clerics held in Damascus.

A Fatwa Council consisting of 15 theologians was established at this forum.

"The president appointed the Grand Mufti following the constitutional powers granted to him. This step will help unite efforts to conduct a moderate religious policy and formulate legislation adequate to modern realities," the statement said.
