Pakistani nuclear physicist Dr. Abdul Kadir Khan revealed the key facts behind the 2013 coup d'état, which led to the overthrow of the legitimately elected President Mohammed Mursi and the role played by the United States, Israel and internal agents in these events.
Indian political expert, Senior Assistant Professor at Manipal Academy of Higher Education Monish Tourangbam told Axar.az that today in the Middle East the United States faces a serious problem in terms of balancing its idealistic principles of promoting democracy.
"In the Middle East, the US faces a critical challenge in terms of balancing its idealist principles of democracy promotion and the realist need to preserve and advance its strategic interests that often means building and sustaining ties with authoritarian rulers, monarchs, as well as the military. The primary determinant of US foreign policy approach to the region has been the sustenance of America’s allies in the region that helps maintain a favorable regional balance of power. The Arab Spring leading to the downfall of Hosni Mubarak, the rise and fall of the Muslim Brotherhood and the present political dispensation with former military leader Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the helm of power reflects the evolving dynamics of US role in the Middle East in general and Egypt in particular" - he mentioned.
"Egypt has been one of the prominent recipients of US military and economic assistance. As such, the US has been seen hedging its bets between different political forces in the country, with the aim to protect and promote American interest. The nature of Washington-Cairo ties reflects on the one hand, America’s intent to create and maintain its political assets in Egypt irrespective of any changes there, and on the other hand, the political forces in Egypt trying to leverage external assistance and support. The nature of civil-military relations in Egypt and the ties between the US and the Egyptian militaries has also remained a major factor affecting US-Egypt dynamics. Amidst the impending discourse on the alleged US role in the ouster of Mohammed Morsi, Cairo’s emerging approach to the US engineered forums on the Palestinian issue is being watched as a sign of the changing contours of Egypt’s role in the politics and economics of Middle East" - Monish Tourangbam added.
