Former U.S. President Donald Trump has added another proposal to his numerous suggestions. He has proposed that Russia and China reduce their military budgets by 50%. The White House leader stated that he is ready to hold an international conference on the matter.
Axar.az reports that political analyst Elkhan Shahinoglu made this statement.
He noted that Trump also proposed reducing the military arsenals of Moscow and Beijing:
"According to Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have welcomed his proposal. However, neither Putin nor Xi has made any statement confirming their approval of Trump’s suggestion. Given the current circumstances, such a move is impossible. On the contrary, Russia and China have been increasing their military budgets year after year. Russia has further expanded its military spending due to its ongoing war against Ukraine, placing new orders for its military-industrial complex. Meanwhile, China has been increasing the number of its warships in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Putin and Xi would only consider Trump’s proposal if, alongside the U.S., Washington’s allies also agreed to cut their military budgets.
On the other hand, the U.S. has been strengthening the QUAD alliance with its partners—India, Australia, and Japan. Within this organization, military cooperation among these four countries has expanded, and joint military exercises are being conducted in the region. Beijing views the QUAD as a threat to China. It is evident that if Beijing demands that Washington disband the QUAD, Donald Trump will not comply with China's request. For instance, just a few days ago, Chinese fighter jets conducted close-range flights near an Australian aircraft in the airspace of the South China Sea. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles expressed concern over the situation. However, China’s Foreign Ministry accused the Australian aircraft of ‘deliberately violating’ Chinese airspace and posing a threat to national security. Under such conditions, expecting China to reduce its military budget is unrealistic.”
The political analyst also recalled that although Trump has spoken separately with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping over the phone, neither Moscow nor Beijing fully trusts the former U.S. president:
"It is no coincidence that Russian Senator Aleksey Pushkov, known for his close ties to the Kremlin, has stated that Donald Trump is trying to disrupt the Russia-China alliance. Pushkov made this remark because Trump wants to reinstate Russia in the ‘Group of Eight’ (G8). Trump has previously called Russia’s removal from the G8 a mistake. China, however, is not part of this group. For this reason, Pushkov believes that Trump aims to distance Russia from China. The logic behind this is that the Russia-China alliance is indeed a strategic threat to the U.S. Washington must try to pull one of them to its side. Donald Trump has chosen Russia—his real rival is China.”
