On December 1-2, 2025, the 16th meeting of the States Parties to the Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was held.
Axar.az informs that this was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.
Within the framework of the meeting, Azerbaijan was elected a member of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict for the years 2025-2029.
Six countries, including Azerbaijan, competed for 4 vacant seats. As a result of the competitive elections, Azerbaijan received the majority of the votes of the countries participating in the first round of voting.
It should be noted that the Committee in question was established to ensure the protection of cultural property during armed conflicts, to monitor compliance with the requirements of the 1954 Hague Convention and its Second Protocol, as well as to promote the provision of technical, legal, and institutional support to states in this area.
The election of Azerbaijan to the Committee is an indicator of the positive image of our country in the international community in the field of cultural heritage protection, the activity it has demonstrated on international platforms, and the consistent policy it has pursued.
Azerbaijan was previously a member of the Committee from 2021 to 2025.
