Yakutia, Rosatom eye use of small NPPs in Far North

The Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation and Yakutia’s government discussed use of small nuclear power plants in the region, as well as issues related to healthcare and city management, Rosatom’s representative Andrei Polosin told reporters on Tuesday.

Earlier, Rosatom’s Head Alexei Likhachev told reporters the corporation in early 2019 would present to the government a list of Russian regions, where small nuclear power plants could be effective. In late 2018, Rosatom and Yakutia signed an agreement on cooperation in construction of small nuclear power plants.

"The meeting was devoted to construction of small power plants, work in low-tonnage LNG, use of ionizing radiation for food storage, aspects of radio medicine, digital technologies in city management, and others," he said.

Yakutia’s Governor Aisen Nikolayev told reporters Rosatom had presented innovative practices, which could be used in the region.

"We have discussed them, including construction of small nuclear power plants, development of the "smart city" aspects," the official said. "No doubt, the local residents will favor from results of this work.

In December, 2019, Rosatom and Yakutia organized a working group to analyze how small nuclear power plants could be used in the Far North.
