Trump takes legal action against BBC over January 6

Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the BBC in a Florida federal court, seeking up to $10 billion in damages over the broadcaster’s editing of his January 6, 2021, speech in a Panorama episode.

Axar.az, citing The Guardian, reports that Trump claims the edit was “intentional, malicious, and deceptive,” alleging defamation and violation of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.

The edited clip suggested he urged supporters to march on the Capitol and “fight like hell.”

The BBC has acknowledged the edit was an error of judgment and issued an apology, but maintains there is no legal basis for defamation.

The controversy led to the resignation of the BBC’s director general and head of news.

Trump’s legal team argues the lawsuit is valid despite the program not airing in the US, citing the BBC’s business presence there. Press freedom advocates have criticized the lawsuit as excessive and politically motivated.
