Today is the Day of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

On June 26, 1918, by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first regular military unit - the Separate Corps - was established. The Military Ministry organized at that time and its leadership, represented by Samad bey Mehmandarov, Aliaga Shikhlinski and other commanders, carried out important reforms in the army building in Azerbaijan.

After Azerbaijan regained its state independence, the country faced a serious crisis in the military sphere. The main task facing Azerbaijan, which did not have a regular army, was to control the situation in the battles for Karabakh, which was carried out with great difficulty. The material and technical support of the army was accompanied by problems.

However, gradually, in order to prevent defeats in the war, all the country's capabilities were mobilized for the building of a national army. The first serious steps were taken from volunteer battalions towards a regular army. Partial military mobilization and conscription were put in place. The military parade held in Baku on October 9, 1992 was a step taken to increase confidence and interest in the army, as well as the spirit of patriotism.

The foundation for building a professional army in the country was laid at the end of 1993. Illegal armed formations were abolished in Azerbaijan, a unified command was created, chaos was put to an end, and a regular army was formed. The visits of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Heydar Aliyev to the frontline regions are also an important stage in army building.

After the ceasefire with Armenia was achieved in May 1994, modern army building began to develop on fundamental grounds.

By the decree signed by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev on May 22, 1998, an important step was taken in restoring the traditions of succession in the building of the National Army, and June 26 was declared Armed Forces Day.

With the decrees and orders of President Ilham Aliyev, who successfully implemented the strategic policy of the great leader in the field of army building, the process of creating a modern military-industrial complex in the country and improving personnel training for the Armed Forces is being successfully implemented.

On September 27, 2020, as a result of the counter-offensive operations launched by the brave Azerbaijani Army under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief for the liberation of our occupied lands, victory was achieved over the enemy. Thus, the Second Karabakh War, which lasted 44 days, was written in golden letters in the history of Azerbaijan under the name of the Patriotic War. Thanks to the courage, dedication, initiative and determination shown on the battlefield by the Azerbaijani soldier, who performed his combat missions and service duties with dignity, our occupied lands were liberated and the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was ensured.

On September 19, 2023, local anti-terrorist measures were launched in the region in order to ensure the provisions of the trilateral statement, prevent large-scale provocations committed in the Karabakh economic region, disarm and withdraw the Armenian armed forces from our territories, neutralize their military infrastructure, ensure the safety of the civilian population returning to the liberated territories, as well as civilian workers and military personnel involved in reconstruction and reconstruction work, and restore the Constitutional structure of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Within the framework of the measures that lasted a little more than 23 hours, the front-line and deep positions and long-term firing points of the Armenian armed forces, as well as combat vehicles and military facilities, were destroyed with the use of high-precision weapons. The enemy surrendered by raising the white flag. Thus, the Constitutional structure was restored in all territories of Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani soldier experienced a great victory for the people at the cost of his blood and life by liberating the lands that had been under the enemy's control for nearly 30 years. The great victory achieved by the Azerbaijani people, state and soldiers together is the result of many years of reforms carried out in the direction of army building. This victory achieved by Azerbaijan is the result of the successful policy, strong will and determination of the Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, who knows very well what, how and when to do it.
