Shio Mujiri elected new Georgia patriarch

Metropolitan Shio Mujiri has been elected as the new, 142nd Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.

Axar.az reports that the vote for the highest religious position, contested by three candidates, took place during a large assembly of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

A total of 39 members of the clerical council participated in the vote, with Metropolitan Shio receiving 22 votes.

It should be noted that the previous Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia since 1977, Ilia II, died on March 17 at the age of 93.
