Putin terminates plutonium disposal agreement with US

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law terminating the intergovernmental agreement with the United States on the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium that is no longer used for defense purposes.

Axar.az informs, citing TASS, the agreement was reached in 2000 and ratified in 2011. It required each side to dispose of 34 tons of weapons-grade plutonium declared surplus to military needs.

Along with the agreement, all related protocols have also been terminated. These documents regulated issues of funding and civil liability for damages, as well as outlined arrangements for disposing of the plutonium covered by the agreement through irradiation in nuclear reactors.
