US, Taliban hold secret talks on release of Americans

The United States and the Taliban have been holding secret talks for months on the release of Americans detained in Afghanistan.

Axar.az reports that The New York Times wrote about this.

“However, the sides have failed to reach an agreement. The Taliban has demanded that the deal include Afghan national Mohammad Rahim, who has been held at Guantanamo since 2008 and is accused of working for Osama bin Laden. The Trump administration, for its part, is seeking the release of at least three US citizens. Afghan authorities have confirmed the release of only two individuals: scientist Denis Coyle and former serviceman Polynesis Jackson. The whereabouts of the third citizen, Mahmoud Habibi, remain unknown. The White House accuses Kabul of hostage diplomacy, while Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi claims that prisoners are not being used as leverage and says the country is seeking normal relations with the United States, including the operation and security of embassies. US officials have stressed that Mohammad Rahim will not be part of any deal until all remaining US citizens are released,” the report said.
