South Korea's ex-first lady jailed 20 months for bribery

South Korea’s former first lady, Kim Keon Hee, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for accepting bribes linked to the Unification Church.

Axar.az, citing BBC, reports that a Seoul court ruled that she abused her position for personal gain by accepting luxury gifts, including a diamond necklace and designer handbags, in exchange for political and business favors.

The court cleared Kim of separate charges related to stock price manipulation and receiving free opinion polls ahead of the 2022 presidential election. Judges cited her lack of prior criminal record and the fact that she did not actively solicit the bribes as mitigating factors.

Kim was ordered to return a diamond necklace and repay 12.85 million won in cash. Her husband, former President Yoon Suk Yeol, is already serving a five-year sentence for abuse of power related to his failed martial law attempt in 2024, marking the first time a former South Korean presidential couple have been convicted simultaneously.

Additional cases involving alleged political recruitment and job-for-gift exchanges are still pending.
