Guterres appoints Jean Arnault for Middle East mediation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed veteran French diplomat Jean Arnault as his Personal Envoy to oversee United Nations efforts regarding the Middle East conflict and its escalating consequences.

Axar.az reports, citing UN portal, with nearly 40 years of experience in international diplomacy, Arnault is a specialist in mediation and peace settlements, having previously led critical UN missions across four continents.

Arnault’s extensive portfolio includes serving as the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Afghanistan and Regional Issues in 2021, as well as holding key roles in Bolivia and Colombia. Notably, between 2015 and 2018, he played a central role in the Colombian peace process, leading the verification of the 2016 Final Peace Agreement.

His appointment signals a reinforced UN commitment to high-level mediation as regional tensions continue to rise.
