Pope Leo visits Argentina amid tensions with Milei

Pope Leo XIV arrived in Argentina on Sunday as part of a 12-day South American tour, with his visit expected to highlight tensions with President Javier Milei over austerity measures and the war in Iran.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that the pontiff is expected to deliver a closely watched address to Milei, whose government’s spending cuts have drawn criticism from the Catholic Church over their impact on the poorest sections of society.

Leo has also criticised the war in Iran, while Milei has strongly supported it and maintained close ties with US President Donald Trump.

The pope's itinerary includes visits to a care centre for people with disabilities and a prison, highlighting his focus on marginalised communities.
