An explosion occurred at a factory in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the world’s largest liquefied natural gas complex.

Axar.az reports, citing Qatari media, the Interior Ministry of Qatar said the blast was caused by a “technical incident” inside one of the facilities in the industrial zone.

“An internal explosion occurred at one of the factories in Ras Laffan Industrial City as a result of a technical incident,” the ministry said, adding that civil defense teams responded immediately.

Authorities reported no injuries and said there was “no leak that threatens the safety of individuals” following the incident.

Fifty-four people have been injured while 18 are missing after an explosion at Qatar's core liquefied natural gas processing site of Ras Laffan on Sunday, according to Reuters.

QatarEnergy did not indicate whether the explosion had caused any damage to the plant, which supplies gas to the domestic market.

The Barzan gas facility has a capacity of 1.4 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), and supplies pipeline gas to local industries and Qatar's power generation sector.

According to Al-Jazeera, the ministry said the blast was caused by a technical malfunction and that security authorities responded immediately, coordinating with emergency teams at the site.

Rescue operations were carried out around the facility, with injured individuals transported for medical treatment. Authorities said technical and legal investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.

The ministry also confirmed that no hazardous leak was detected following the explosion, and that there was no threat to public safety or the surrounding environment.

Ras Laffan, located about 80 kilometers north of Doha, is Qatar’s main industrial hub for processing natural gas produced from the North Field.
